Wildlife Forensic in India

Wildlife Institute of India has been receiving wildlife offence cases from various enforcement agencies since 1987. It was felt that enforcement of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act (1972) is often hampered due to the lack of reference materials and methods necessary to identify the animal and plant species in various wildlife offence cases.

Therefore, a need was felt for strengthening the Wildlife Forensic capabilities so as to support the enforcement agencies in the proper implementation of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in controlling the illegal wildlife trade.

Acollaborative project between US Fish and Wildlife Services and Wildlife institute of India was initiated in October 1995 to strengthen the Wildlife forensic capability at WII through Research and Development and then disseminating the knowledge to the various law enforcement agencies.

Wildlife Institute of India provided the logistic support as well as the work space for the forensic lab, while the infrastructure has been procured through Wildlife Forensic Project. The forensic laboratory became operational in January 1998.

Forensic database of hair

A single hair found at a crime scene can now provide investigators with an instant lead thanks to a new database of human scalp hair characteristics developed by QUT PhD forensic science student Paul Barton.

Mr Barton, from QUT's Discipline of Chemistry, analysed donated scalp hair from 70 people of each gender and a variety of ages from African, Caucasian and Asian backgrounds using infra-red radiation instruments and interpreted the results with the aid of special mathematical methods.

DFS to test for chinks in armour

To shield its special force personnel with bulletproof jackets, the Gujarat government has decided to set up a ballistic firing range at the Gandhinagar Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS). Once it is set up, Gujarat will be the first state in the country to have its own centre to test bulletproof equipment including vests, helmets, glass and vehicles.

All state governments send bulletproof samples to Defence Research and Development Organisation’s  Terminal Ballistic Research Laboratory (TBRL) situated in Chandigarh for testing. Armours are purchased only after they are okayed by ballistic experts.
