'Headley had surveyed area near Pune blast site' (Lead): "Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative David Coleman Headley had surveyed the Osho ashram area, which is 200 yards from the German Bakery where a bomb blast Saturday evening killed eight people, including a foreigner, Home Secretary G.K. Pillai said.
'It may be noted that Osho Ashram is 200 yards from the bakery and was one of the sites surveyed by LeT operative David Headley,' Pillai told reporters here after chairing a high-level meeting of senior officials in the wake of the Pune blast. Headley, a suspect in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is currently in a US jail.
Pillai said the central agencies had informed the Maharashtra Police on October 12, 2009 about Headley's visit."

Pune blast shows advance in terror technology: Experts Gandhinagar, Feb 16 (IANS)
The material used in Saturday's Pune blast that killed nine people is substantially different from what was used in the deadly serial blasts in Ahmedabad in 2008, and shows a worrying advance in terror technology, according to forensic experts.
The team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) here who are in Pune to assist the police in the blast probe say RDX was the main explosive used at the German Bakery in Pune, and it is substantially more lethal than the ammonium nitrate used in Ahmedabad and elsewhere in 2008

Police on the hunt for perfect PC crime breathalyser

UK police are continuing to develop a tool to detect evidence of illegal activity on PCs that could be as easy for officers to use as a breathalyser.
Specialist e-crime policing organisations have been examining commercially available digital forensic devices that can search text, pictures and computer code on a hard disk for material of police interest.
This 'digital triage' tool would give frontline police with little training in digital forensics the ability to search for anything from text in emails relating to stolen goods to illegal images.
Detective superintendent Charlie McMurdie, the chief of the UK's Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU), told silicon.com research is continuing to find a suitable commercially available digital forensics tool that could be adapted for use by frontline officers.

Bullet Trajectories: Misidentifying Bullet Trajectories in Reconstruction
Pythagora’s Theorem is the basis for establishing the area of origin in blood pattern analysis and is commonly used in
shooting reconstruction for establishing bullet trajectories. In part, this method of triangulation works well in blood
pattern analysis, because a specific blood pattern is created by a hemorrhaging event from a single source that casts spatter
in directions away from the source point. By dissecting the central axis of the stains to find an area of convergence,
and taking the arc sine of the ratio of representative stains, one may derive the degrees of the angle of incidence or impact.
