CSI FORENSIC SUMMER WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS!

The CSI: Fun With Forensics is a fun and exciting, hands-on, program that teaches children between the ages of 9- 15 the skills and methods used by forensics scientists, crime scene technicians and detectives to solve real (age-appropriate) crimes.

Forensic Workshop FAQ's

Q. How early do I need to sign up for a workshop?

A. We prefer that you sign up for a workshop at least 2 weeks before the workshop starts. However, many of our workshops fill up months before they start, so the earlier the better, and please check the workshop page or call us at 9819288253 to make sure there is still space available. We will take registrations until the workshop is full, which at times is up until the start date of the workshop.

Q. What do I need to bring to a workshop?

A. IFO will provide you with any reading materials and/or multimedia supplies that the workshop requires. You will need to bring writing material for taking notes.

Q. Is lodging included in the workshop price?

A. Most IFO workshops do not include lodging in the price.

Q. What happens if I have to cancel a workshop once I’m registered?

A. If you cancel a workshop prior to the start date, 50% of your total fees is non-refundable.

Q. If I cannot attend a workshop for which I am registered, can I let someone else come in my place of that same workshop?

A. You may transfer your space to someone else. Transferring workshop sessions is only permitted 30 days in advance or more of the workshop start date. However, you will be charged a Rs100 as administrative fee. You must call the IFO office to complete the transfer prior to the workshop.

Q. What happens if there are not enough people registered for a workshop?

A. IFO reserves the right to cancel a workshop if there are not enough registrants two weeks before the workshop begins. If so, your fees will be refunded in full. IFO is not responsible for losses incurred on housing, travel or other arrangements.

Forensic Anthropology: Learning From Skeletons

The examination process of human remains by the forensic anthropologist includes three tasks.

One of those tasks is providing a biological profile (age, sex, stature, ancestry, anomalies, pathology, individual features) of the victim.

The second task would be recreating the postmortem period based on the condition of the remains and the recovery environment.

Lastly, they would provide data regarding the death event, including evidence of trauma occurring during the perimortem period (time of the death).

•By using bones we can get a rather accurate estimate of a
person height.

Female

tibia (cm) x 2.53 + 72.57 = height (cm)
radius (cm) x 3.87 + 73.50 = height (cm)

Male

tibia (cm) x 2.39 + 81.68 = height (cm)
radius (cm) x 3.65 + 80.40 = height (cm)

•Example:

A 41.3 cm Caucasoid male tibia was found in a wooded area.
How tall was the this person?

41.3 cm x 2.39 + 81.68 = 180 cm (5’-11”)

 

 

Forensic Australia: The dingo killed my baby!

Australia reopened 32-year-old mystery of whether a dingo killed a baby.

THE CASE IN A NUTSHELL:

The mystery of Azaria Chamberlain's disappearance in the Australian Outback in 1980 became the most notorious, divisive and baffling legal drama in the country's history. Had a wild dog really taken the baby? Or had her mother, Lindy, slit her daughter's throat and buried her in the desert?

 

Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, their two sons and their nine-week-old daughter, Azaria, were settling in for the night at a campsite near the rock. Azaria was sleeping in a tent and Lindy and Michael making dinner nearby when a baby's cry rang out. Lindy went to check on her daughter and says she saw a dingo slink out of the tent and disappear into the darkness. Azaria's bassinet was empty, the blankets still warm.

There was an intense search, but Azaria was never found.The Chamberlains insisted the dingo snatched their daughter.

But police and the public doubted a dingo was big or strong enough to drag away a 10-pound baby. Nobody could find documentation of a dingo killing a child before.

The prosecution said there was no dingo saliva on Azaria's jumpsuit, which Lindy put down to the jacket she had been wearing over it. But the jacket was missing, and police said she was lying.

Australians didn't like the Chamberlains.it was all wrong for a grieving mother. Australians didn't understand her stoicism and recoiled when she spoke of graphic evidence clinically and without tears. Lindy — heavily pregnant with her fourth child — was convicted of murder, accused of slashing her daughter's throat with nail scissors and making it look like a dingo attack. She was sentenced to life in prison with hard labour. Michael was convicted of being an accessory.

Three years into Lindy's prison sentence, Azaria's jacket was found by chance — near a dingo den. Days later, Lindy was released from prison. A Royal Commission, the highest form of investigation in Australia, debunked much of the forensic evidence used at trial and her conviction was overturned.

As the evidence shifted in favor of Lindy's innocence, public guilt grew. Three decades later, it remains.

 

Forensic Anthropologist Have a Better Method for Well search

Dr. Rick Snow specializes in recovering human remains. The former state forensic anthropologist for Georgia has, among other things, spent eight months excavating mass graves in Bosnia.

Dr. Snow uses an alternative method, although heavy equipment is still in the equation.

Working in a corkscrew pattern around the well, a 50-foot well would end up with a hole 200 feet in diameter.“What this allows us to do is work in complete safety,” Snow said.

The well shaft is kept covered with metal sheets to prevent debris from contaminating evidence, allowing investigators and forensic anthropologists to examine an undisturbed crime scene, Snow said.

The technique is more effective but also more expense.

Certification

A 'Certificate of Participation ' by I.F.O to all Participants of this workshop. At the end of this workshop, a small competition will be organized among the participating students and winners will be awarded with a 'Certificate of Merit '.
