The science that started that primitive day today exists in a marvelous
state and has no way to improve by leaps and bounds. Toxicology is just a branch of
that science which started roughly 45,000 years---- a small but highly significant
part----- as it is today and as it was in yesteryears. When science began, primitive
man had but 3 goals: 1) the quest for an universal solvent, 2) the conversion of metal into gold {Alchemy} and 3) the yearning for an eternal life which lead in its turn, not towards eternity but, towards medicine and in medicine lay the roots of toxicology

Forensic Entomology, India

IFO FORENSIC STANDARDS AND RESEARCH PVT LTD, INDIA

www.ifsr.in

Forensic Entomology is the use of the insects, and their arthropod relatives that inhabit decomposing remains to aid legal investigations. The applications are
wide-ranging, but the most frequent is to determine the minimum time since death (minimum post-mortem interval, or PMI) in suspicious death investigations.

The medicolegal section focuses on the criminal component of the legal system and deals with the necrophagous (or carrion) feeding insects that typically infest human remains.

Forensic entomologists are commonly called upon to determine the postmortem interval or "time since death" in homicide investigations. More specifically, the forensic entomologist estimates a portion of the postmortem interval based on the age of the insect present. This entomological based estimation is most commonly called the "Time Since Colonization". Based on the factors in a particular investigation, this may, or may not, closely approximate the entire postmortem interval.

However, there are many complicating factors that affect the rate of development of larvae on a body:
· Temperature (which can depend on geographical location, indoor or outdoor exposure, sun or shade, time of day and season)
· Heat generated by the maggot mass
· Food source (tissue type, e.g. liver, heart, lungs)
· Contaminants and toxins (external and internal)
· Burial or other obstructions (e.g. plastic sheets, water) that hinder access and egg-laying by adult insects.
All of the above need to be considered when estimating a PMI, yet for many of them, little information is available. For example, the elevated temperature due to the maggot mass can be readily appreciated by any angler reaching into a bowl of bait
maggots, but quantifying its effect on larval development still requires detailed study, for example using novel thermal imaging techniques

Forensic Science India - Home

Forensic Science is the application of scientific principles for the investigation of crime. All the clues that are from a crime scene are analyzed by forensic scientists on the crime scene or in a crime laboratory and are converted into evidences worth producing in legal courts.

The word forensic comes from the Latin adjective forensis, meaning "of or before the forum"

Forensic scientists should have the ability to analyze all physical evidence found on a victim or on the scene of a crime and compare it to evidence found on a suspect and provide expert testimony in a court of law. The evidences might include traces of blood, saliva, other body fluids, hair, fingerprints, explosives, specimens of tissue for poisons, blood and urine for alcohol, footwear and tyre impression etc. The expertise of a forensic scientist lies in the determination of facts using these evidences and in preparing a report of their investigation and appear in the court to give expert opinion on the case worked upon. They work closely with the police to provide scientific evidence that is admissible in the court.

FORENSIC IN INDIA:

The application of science and technology to the detection and investigation of crime and administration of justice is not new to India. Although our ancestors did not know forensic science in its present form, scientific methods in one way or the other seem to have been followed in the investigation of crime. Its detailed reference is found in Kautilya’s ‘Arthashastra,’ which was written about 2300 years ago. Indians studied various patterns of the papillary lines, thousands of years ago. It is presumed that they knew about the persistency and individuality of fingerprints, which they used as signatures. Even Mr. KM Kata, a frequent contributor to ‘Nature’, stated that the Chinese records proved the use of fingerprints in an ancient kingdom of southern India. The Indians knew for long that the handprints, known as the Tarija’, were inimitable. The use of fingerprints as signatures by illiterate people in India, introduced centuries ago, was considered by some people as ceremonial only, till it was scientifically proved that identification from fingerprints was infallible.

Forensic Jobs in India- Are they??

India has it all from a booming economy to a booming crime rate. What makes India prone to the continuous face of crime and violence is the less resilient it throws on crime breakers in the country.

Time and Again it has shown the forensic tests has failed in many cases, due to complaints from the Forensic Labs stating its insufficient funds, inexperienced staff, lack of space and infrastructure. So where is Forensic not playing its part?

Well, the Institutions providing Forensic Science has increased comparing the 2005 mark. The Forensic Laboratories boast about how they have the necessary tool. And how the economy needs young Forensic Scientists

To be very Honest, i have seen as a little of 2 % of the batch i passed out being placed. What happened to remaining 98%??

Why are there no recruitments for Forensic Freshers, why do Forensic Laboratories wave away young Forensic Scientists who want to make their mark??

Talent in India for Forensics can be reaped only if the seeds of Forensic have been sown to produce results. Without that the young experts are like "an engine ready to work but are without fuel"

It is time for the Indian Government to take heed to these young experts and give them the best there is. A well built system in forensic only can prove that India can be a fore-runner in the field of forensic.

All this would curb the increasing crime rates, would help in effective case solving and last but not the least a powerful Justice System to India's growth.
